2 part illustration: City Nightlife and Rainy City Day Illustration (color pencil) March 2022 This piece is a two-part piece including a positive perspective and a negative perspective. Both pieces were made on an illustration board and colored pencils. The positive is called city nightlife which represents what an evening in a downtown city area would look like. The negative piece is called rainy city day and represents what it would look like on a rainy day in the city. Most people are in cars because we have become a car-centric city contributing to pollution and carbon emissions. I wanted that negative perspective to focus on those aspects more. This piece was influenced by Gustave Caillebotte's Paris Street rainy day. I wanted to create my own contemporary and local version.
Bird 30 cm by 23 cm Block Print September 2021 This piece is titled Bird and was created by using the block print technique. It is intended to be a piece of work that is calming to the eye. The addition of the tree and natural elements is inspired by Gustave Baumann. Nature and scenery pieces are beautiful, and Gustave used vibrant colors to enhance the beauty. I used his tree prints as inspiration since this was a new medium for me. I was inspired by how he enhanced the beauty of the environment with colors and wanted to see if it was possible to do that in black and white.
Masquerade 60.96 cm by 60.96 cm Painting December 2021 This piece is a diptych painting called masquerade. The piece was heavily inspired by the pop art movement popular in the ‘50s. I focused on Roy Lichtenstein's work to help inspire mine. The meaning behind the piece is supposed to represent the girl in the painting hiding her true feelings under a mask that is not visible until she "takes it off". That is when she finally reveals her true emotions.
Pappus 30.48 cm by 30.28 cm Acrylic paint September 2022 This piece was slightly inspired by my sister. Anytime she sees a pappus (white dandelion) she must blow them. The style was influenced by the artist Mary Cassatt. Her main style is impressionism, and she usually paints children. I made this piece by layering multiple colors of acrylic paint on a canvas. I used her impressionist style in the background. Cassat tends to make large strokes in every direction in the background of the focal point. This is to draw attention to the focal/center point. The focal point is usually the child but, in my case, it is the activity the child is taking part in.
Reality 25.4 cm by 38.1 cm Charcoal Pencil July 2022 This is a charcoal sketch named reality. It depicts a woman who is growing through something emotionally painful which can be completely interpreted by what that is by the viewer. I want the viewer to be able to relate depending on their own experiences. This was created using an illustration board and charcoal pencils. The pieces were inspired by Kathe Kollwitz, specifically her charcoal drawings because of the heavy emotional value they hold. Her drawing truly tells a story.
Reflection 91.44 cm by 91.44 cm Acrylic Paint April 2022 This is an acrylic painting on canvas titled reflection. I named it this because this is what I would see if looking at myself in a mirror. I was influenced by Barkley L Hendricks, a painting during the mid to late 1900s. He is known for his portraits of people in natural positions/ poses. So, when creating it I used a reference picture. In the reference picture, I took a natural position like Hendricks.
Shout 22.86 cm by 30.48 cm Oil pastel on illustration September 2022 This piece was heavily inspired by Edvard Munch's The Scream and Anxiety. I was inspired not only by his style but the meaning behind his piece. I found a way to connect the meaning of his pieces to mine. I used Edvard Munch’s The Scream as a base and added some of my own additives to fit my meaning behind it. I also used different colors compared to Munch but in the same style and movement.
Us 19 cm by 25.5cm Block print October 2022 The intention behind this piece is to embrace your natural self. This piece is called Us and was influenced by Kadir Nelson, a modern artist who focuses on illustration painting. It is inspired by his portraits of people and how he displays their features such as hair, eyes, nose, etc This piece was created using carving rubber and carving tools with black ink. This piece is supposed to make others feel comfortable in their own skin
Time Crunch 60.96 cm by 91.44 cm Digital Manipulation November 2021 This piece is called time crunch created using digital manipulation in Photoshop and Photopea. Certain aspects and the style of the artwork were inspired by Man Ray's photography. I wanted to create a dramatic piece that could cause curiosity and differing interpretations. The piece is inspired by everyday life stressors, which is why I decided to title it time crunch.
The Environment (Mother Nature) 35.56 cm by 15.24 cm Cardboard February 2022 This wearable art piece is called The Environment simply because that is what it is replicating, but when you put it on it turns you into mother nature. It was inspired by the natural earth and the artist Andy Goldsworthy. He creates nature-based pieces that show their natural beauty. I created shoulder pads, a neckpiece, and headwear and found a way to incorporate a piece of nature in each one.
Flower pot 53.975 cm by 44.98 cm Photography April 2021 This is a photography piece with slight digital manipulation tilted flower pot. I created this by positioning the objects how I liked and photographing them. I used Photoshop to edit the picture to get this finished look. This piece was inspired by Giorgio Morandi's still-life paintings. I was inspired by how he arranged his objects and each piece remained balanced with another.
